SOUTH DAKOTA

Motorcycles were required to be registered by the state starting in 1905, along with all motor vehicles.  No special plate requirements were mentioned, so motorcycle and passenger plates were indistinguishable by appearance.  State-issued motorcycle plates began in 1913, just as passenger plates did, and 1,212 were registered that year.  The highest known 1913 motorcycle plate is #1201.  The 1913, 1914 and 1915 plates are undated.
